This vivid Fort Sumter stereo view from the camera of George S. Cook can be traced to September 8, 1863 because the breach in the rampart wall (upper left center) is the same size as in the "exploding shell" photograph. This view, which may have been taken during a lull in the fighting, is clearer than the action photographs and does not exude the same sense of danger of the action photos.

This view was published and sold by George LaGrange Cook, the son of Civil War photographer George S. Cook. The younger Cook opened a photo studio in Charleston, South Carolina in 1880, the same year his father moved to Richmond and opened a studio there. The "1865" date on the handwritten caption is incorrect; the fort by then had endured far more damage than visible here.
