Union Breastworks

Some of the best hand-colored Civil War stereoviews were issued by the Anthony Co. on yellow mounts from 1864 to 1866. The artists used a delicate touch and took pains to avoid painting the entire stereograph. This view shows Union breastworks along the Appomattox River near Petersburg in 1865. The Civil War in Depth Volume II features this and other views in the first ever chapter of 3-D Civil War photos in color.

The hand-canceled tax stamp on the back of this view shows that the original purchaser paid the 3-cent tax on photographs that existed from 1864 to 1866. The tax, highly unpopular, was repealed less than two years after it was enacted.
