Both Alexander Gardner and Mathew Brady went to Gettysburg with their cameras. Gardner arrived two days after the battle; Brady arrived about two weeks after the fighting ended. Both took historic series of images. Gardner's views were grim. Many showed the carnage of war. Brady's views were more sedate. Many were landscape views. Brady and his photographers also focused on John Burns, the 69-year-old veteran of the War of 1812, resident and town marshal of Gettysburg, who took up the flintlock musket shown shown in this view and went out on the firing line with the boys on the first day of the battle. Burns was wounded three times. He became a Northern hero.
