One of the Last to Fall

T. C. Roche made 22 negatives of the Confederate dead at Petersburg, including several views of this unfortunate infantryman. The views of the dead at Petersburg apparently sold quite well, because they are among the most commonly found views on today's antique photo market. This soldier fell only six days before Lee surrendered at Appomatox.

This orange-mount Anthony carries the address of 591 Broadway. Since the Anthony Co. moved to that address in February, 1869, we can assume that this card was issued after that date. In 1869, Anthony sold war views for $4 a dozen. Hand-tinted views cost $5 a dozen, although this writer has yet to see an example of an orange-mount, hand-tinted Anthony view.
