The Center for Civil War Photography (CCWP) has partnered with the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) to produce a lesson plan and online 3D photography exhibit.  The lesson plan and online exhibit were launched on the CWPT website last week.

“In one fell swoop, we are providing our members, teachers and their students with the rare opportunity to see Civil War photos as they should be seen, said Rob Shenk, CWPT’s Director of Internet Development and Education. “CCWP’s restoration of these Library of Congress negatives is better than anything I’ve seen.”

Most Civil War photographs were recorded as 3D stereoviews, but today they are almost always displayed as 2D images.  This online exhibit allows viewers to experience the photographs in 3D as Civil War-era photographers intended.

The online exhibit can be viewed on the CWPT website at: www.civilwar.org/photos/3d-photography-special/

CCWP also has an online exhibit featuring more 3D photographs available at: www.civilwarphotography.org/3-d-anaglyph-photographs-exhibit

The photographs on both websites can be viewed in 3D using a pair of red/cyan anaglyph 3D glasses.  Website visitors can obtain a free pair of 3D glasses from the Civil War Preservation Trust by completing an online form or from the Center for Civil War Photography by joining at any one of the CCWP’s six membership levels.

CWPT and CCWP have also written a lesson plan to allow teachers to use Civil War photographs to teach their students about using photographs as primary sources for studying history.  The lesson plan is intended for students in grades 4–7 and is available for either 2D or 3D viewing.  “It really encourages the students to use the photos to gather information, something our organization has always promoted,” said CCWP Director of Imaging John Richter.  The lesson plan is available on the CWPT website at: www.civilwar.org/education/teachers/lesson-plans/civil-war-photography.html
