The photography of the Civil War comes alive in a new exhibit in the Temporary Gallery of the new Museum and Visitor Center at the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. In just over 10 minutes, 71 images are displayed in a repeating program broadcast on a 46-inch LCD screen.
"We use Civil War photography to help illustrate a battle, the terrain fought over, weapons, etc. which it does,” said CCWP Director of Imaging John Richter. “But I also think we need to step back and just admire the beauty of the photography, which I hope this new presentation does."
Richter said the images were ones “that weren't used in the other exhibits and we wanted to do something with them.” Working with the Gettysburg Foundation, the CCWP agreed to create a digital slide show without captions to show just the photographs.
“I was given a pool of images originally selected by CCWP member John Kelley,” Richter said. “After digitally restoring each one, I decided to crop them to make full use of the widescreen display. This had an added benefit in giving each image a new look by making them fit the wide screen format. I think even some of the familiar images take on a new life because of this. This new show is really an appreciation of Civil War photography and I think the average person will be amazed at how much detail is visible."
The new $103 million Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center is located at 1195 Baltimore Pike in Gettysburg, between the pike and Taneytown Road. The facility opened in April, but the official Grand Opening, which includes the redisplay of the Cyclorama painting, is set for Sept. 26-28. Regular Center hours are from 8am to 6pm, and summer hours, from June 1 to September 1, are 8am to 7pm.
