Display is a Joint Venture of CWPT, Center for Civil War Photography and The History Channel

The Civil War Preservation Trust’s (CWPT) traveling exhibition, Capitals at War will return to the capital area and will be on display at the Center for Civil War Photography’s (CCWP) annual seminar, The Image of War September 15–17, 2006.

Capitals at War, an in-depth, comparative photo study of Civil War capital cities Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, produced by CWPT, CCWP, and the History Channel, contrasts the two capital cities in side by side 19th century imagery. The exhibition, the only side-by-side visual comparison of the two Civil War capitol cities, consists of nineteen mounted boards with three images each. Capitals at War was first exhibited in April 2006 at Washington’s Rayburn House Office Building in association with a CWPT awards ceremony. The exhibit has also already made stops in Memphis, Tenn. and Richmond, Va.

“Seeing the machinations of war amid the nerve centers everyday life and government is striking,” said CWPT President Jim Lighthizer. “These are photos of familiar buildings and sites well-known to all Americans, but made almost unrecognizable by the strangeness of the events surrounding them.” CWPT is an annual co-sponsor of the Image of War, now in its sixth year. Based in Manassas, Virginia, the seminar will feature some of the foremost experts on the topic including Lincoln specialist Harold Holzer, Brandy Station authority Clark “Bud” Hall, 3-D imagery expert Bob Zeller, and wet-plate photographer Rob Gibson. The three-day seminar will explore various facets of Civil War photography and make visits to Washington, D.C., Manassas National Battlefield, and Brandy Station, Virginia. Previous seminars have been held at Gettysburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Richmond.

After viewing the exhibition, seminar attendees will be treated to two and three dimensional slide shows, a wet-plate photo demonstration, and site visits at the Mathew Brady building, Ford’s Theater, the Abraham Lincoln Cottage, Fort Stevens, and other significant area sites. Book signings, a photographic quiz, and a raffle will also be part of the festivities. With 75,000 members, CWPT is the largest nonprofit battlefield preservation organization in the United States. Its mission is to preserve our country’s remaining Civil War battlefields. Since 1987, the organization has saved more than 22,000 acres of hallowed ground nationwide. CWPT’s website is located at www.civilwar.org.

CCWP is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation, study, use and presentation of Civil War photography and related equipment in all its forms and formats.
