Alexander Gardner's Complete Civil War Catalog

Here, available for the first time, is a link to a free PDF of Alexander Gardner’s complete, 1861-1865 catalog of “Photographic Incidents of the War.” The only known original Gardner catalog is dated September 1863 and does not include the more than 1,000 additional images his gallery produced during the rest of the war. In 2001, Center for Civil War Photography President Bob Zeller was able to assemble a complete, 1861-1865 Gardner catalog using the Library of Congress’s “caption book” for its vast collection of original negatives as well as a variety of other sources. The catalog was the Center’s first publication. In this fully updated and expanded catalog, we have added more than 2,400 links to every extant negative as well as hundreds of prints for which the negatives no longer exist. The catalog also includes dozens of previously undocumented images, with links to all of them as well.
